I spent a couple of days simply working with the caterpillar's skin texture in photoshop, painting simple variations of the patterns and tweaking the hue. I knew that I wanted something akin to the monarch caterpillar, but the black and white was a little too harsh for the sympathetic caterpillar character. Here are some of the early variations.
